1. Preparing Your Pond Plants for Winter

  • As the growing season ends, stop fertilizing pond plants.
  • Move tropical lilies and store them in a water-filled container located in a place where they will not freeze.
  • In preparation for winter, cut back pond perennials’ leaves and stems.

2. Fall

  • To give a pond landscape an additional layer of interest, fall is the time to plant spring blooming bulbs around the pond. Perennials are also a great way to add fall color to your garden. Hardy Mums, Asters, and other late bloomers extend the color in the perennial border around your pond.

3. Clean-up

  • The most important goal in pond maintenance is to prevent debris from building up on the pond bottom.
  • Dead leaves and flowers in your pond can quickly decompose, resulting in toxins that foul the water and are very harmful to your fish. Net and/or skim them out of the pond.
  • Leaves and other pond plant debris make an excellent addition to your compost pile.
